IOWA CITY, Iowa -- An Iowa bank executive believed to have killed his wife and four children before taking his own life will be mourned with them at one funeral.
Sister Agnes Giblin, who taught Steven Sueppel in the third grade, told The Des Moines Register that she expects people who knew the family to be angry at him. But she said that a joint funeral is to be at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Iowa City, where Sueppel and his wife were married and their children were baptized.
"We believe in eternal life and a loving, merciful God who loves us unconditionally," Giblin said. "We cannot judge."
Investigators say that Sueppel beat his wife, Sheryl, and children to death on Monday and then intentionally crashed his mini-van into a post on Interstate 80, the Register said.
Giblin said that the family attended Easter service Sunday. Family members who saw them that day said they seemed normal.
Steven Sueppel had been charged with embezzling $560,000 from Hills Bank.
