FORT VALLEY, Ga. - Sheriff's deputies rescued a newborn girl from a holding cell toilet in a Georgia jail after a woman gave birth.
Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese said that the girl, who weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces, at birth, was doing well in a hospital hours after she was pulled from the toilet Wednesday morning, The Sun News in Macon reported.
The mother, Cornelia Kornegay, 25, did not tell anyone she was pregnant, jail officials said. She was arrested on a probation violation Feb. 16.
On Tuesday night, a nurse examined Kornegay after she complained of severe cramps. The nurse recommended that she see a doctor and had her transferred to the holding cell.
Kornegay later said she did not tell anyone she was pregnant because she was afraid her parents would find out.
"My baby's in the toilet," she said after giving birth.
Deese said that Kornegay is likely to be charged with cruelty to children.
