MARIETTA, Ga. -- U.S. military officials said a suspicious package was detonated at the main gate of Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Ga., late Wednesday night.
The package was left on a seat of a car parked at the gate by a man who reportedly told guards he was feeling "funny" and had something dangerous in his car, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said.
Marietta Police spokesman Mark Bishop said military authorities don't know what was in the car, but, "Rather than risk moving it, they blew it up," he said.
The driver's name wasn't released. He was placed in police custody.
The mid-afternoon discovery forced the closure of heavily traveled Cobb Parkway until about midnight, badly snarling rush-hour commuting traffic.
