Adams warns against British intervention
by UPI

WASHINGTON -- Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams Tuesday warned the renewed presence of British Special Forces in Northern Ireland would escalate recent violence.

The use of Special Forces to track down dissident IRA killers would undermine the fragile peace process, Adams said, referring to last week's killings of two British soldiers and a police officer in Northern Ireland.

"It's important that we don't minimize what occurred but we don't exaggerate what occurred," Adams said at the National Press Club, calling the use of British Special Forces "a return to the bad practices of the past."

Adams, who was visiting the United States for St. Patrick's Day celebrations, said everyone has a responsibility to defend the peace in Northern Ireland, The Daily Mail reported.

"There can be no going back, there is no turning back. The only way to go is forward," Adams said.
