CORONA, Calif. -- Raul and Cathy Sarinana of Corona, Calif., should get the death penalty for killing their 11-year-old nephew, a prosecutor says.
Deputy District Attorney John Aki said Tuesday the separate juries determining the punishments for each defendant should hand down a death sentence based on the couple's conviction in the December 2005 death of Ricky Morales, the Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise said.
The couple has also been accused of killing Morales' 13-year-old brother, Conrad, whose body was found months earlier in a Corona trash can.
Aki told jurors that after the pair allegedly killed Conrad Morales in Randle, Wash., the Sarinanas transported the body to Corona as a lesson to Ricky Morales.
"They brought him down here like a trophy, like a reminder to Ricky that, 'This is what awaits you. You need to do what we say until we decide to dispose of you like we disposed of your brother,'" Aki alleged.
The Press-Enterprise said Ricky Morales died on Christmas Day 2005 after being kicked as a punishment by Raul Sarinana.
