BLACKSBURG, Va. - The president of Virginia Tech said Tuesday the gunman who killed 32 people and himself was a student who lived on-campus.
In a CNN interview, university President Charles Steger said the shooter was "an Asian male who was a resident in one of our dormitories."
He wouldn't say for sure the same person was responsible for two dorm shootings early Monday that preceded the deadly rampage two hours later but said he didn't believe a second gunman was still on the loose.
The gunman killed 30 people and wounded 15 in Norris Hall classrooms. He had chained the doors shut and went from class to class, shooting. Some students survived by leaping out of windows, while others said they played dead on the floor.
Others were able to keep the gunman at bay by barricading themselves in classrooms and offices.
A police source told CNN a .22-caliber handgun and a 9mm handgun were recovered at the scene.
At least 15 others were wounded in the spree, which was the deadliest school attack in U.S. history.
