MARGARETVILLE, N.Y. - Authorities surrounded a burning house in New York Wednesday where a man was believed to have hidden after killing one state trooper and wounding two others.
The suspect, identified as Travis Trim, 23, of North Lawrence, N.Y., was believed to have killed Trooper David Brinkerhoff, 29 and wounded Trooper Richard Mattson Wednesday morning while they were searching a property near Margaretville during the investigation into the Tuesday shooting of Trooper Matthew Gombosi.
Brinkerhoff died and Mattson was hospitalized at Albany Medical Center but was expected to recover, Capital News 9 TV in Albany reported
Gombosi was shot Tuesday outside a gas station in Margaretville. The trooper, who was wearing body armor, was not seriously injured.
Police said the suspect had a road map and appeared to be lost. Troopers later found a stolen minivan Trim had been driving.
Dozens of police officers later surrounded a house in nearby Arkville where they believed Trim barricaded himself. Police exchanged gunfire with Trim and then fired gas rounds into the house, News 10-TV in Albany reported. Shortly afterward the house went up in flames.
Brinkerhoff, an eight-year veteran, is survived by his wife and their 7-month-old daughter.
