FRESNO, Calif. - A 19-year-old California State University student was in custody in Fresno Wednesday, charged with shooting three men and killing one in a video game dispute.
Criminology major Jonquel Brooks, 19, was being held in lieu of $3 million bail, charged with the shooting death of Brant Daniels, also 19. Two other males, aged 19 and 22 also received minor gunshot wounds late Monday when the dispute over a Sony PlayStation arose in the University Village residences, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Brooks then fled to an apartment several miles away, where he shaved his head and changed his clothes "apparently in an attempt to avoid being recognized."
Brooks surrendered to police Tuesday morning after several hours of negotiations with police, his attorney and his father, Dyer said.
Defense attorney David Mugridge said he had reviewed preliminary information and said it appears Brooks acted in self defense, the newspaper said.
