U.S. calls for more Iran sanctions
by UPI

WASHINGTON - News of nuclear advances in Iran prompted U.S. officials to call for new international sanctions against Tehran.

"What is key here, and what is obvious to everyone is that Iran has continued to act in defiance of the wishes of the international community," U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said in The Washington Times. "We need to continue to apply pressure and increase pressure with an additional Security Council resolution if they don't comply."

Inspectors from the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency discovered Sunday that Iran had made more technical progress in its uranium-enrichment efforts than previously thought, bringing the country closer to having the ability to produce nuclear-grade fuel for weapons or reactors.

Iran has defied U.N. Security Council demands to halt its uranium-enrichment program and has said its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
