Gonzales still has president's support
by UPI

WASHINGTON - The White House continued to support U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Friday despite mounting political pressure calling for his resignation.

Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., on Thursday announced plans to introduce a no-confidence resolution on the Senate floor as early as next week.

When questioned about the move at Friday's press briefing, White House spokesman Tony Fratto called it another of "the bottomless bag of tricks that Democrats in the Senate would like to pull out on a regular basis."

Fratto offered no specific comment about the addition of Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., to the list of Republican senators calling on Gonzales to step down.

"We understand that there are senators who have different views," he said.

Sen. Arlen Spector, R-Pa., has predicted Gonzales will step down once Congress has completed its inquiry into the firings of U.S. attorneys by the Justice Department.
