Heavy rains douse parts of Midwest
by UPI

DES MOINES, Iowa - Several inches of rain fell on parts of the U.S. Midwest, flooding some highways early Thursday.

The National Weather Service posted flash flood watches for 27 counties from Minnesota to Missouri and flood warnings for some counties in Iowa and Kansas. In Iowa, many roads west of Des Moines, Iowa, were closed, The Des Moines Register reported.

At Cheney State Park, a popular get-away spot near Wichita, Kan., campers who arrived early for the Memorial Day weekend were forced to evacuate, The Wichita Eagle reported.

In Reno County in Kansas, a number of roads were closed.

More than 6 inches of rain fell overnight west of Des Moines. Forecasters warned of more rain through the weekend.

The flood warnings generally involved smaller rivers like the Raccoon south of Des Moines, not the Mississippi and its larger tributaries.
