CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Ruth Graham, the wife of evangelist Billy Graham, was laid to rest Sunday in a private interment in North Carolina.
The burial, attended by her husband, five children, extended family and close friends, took place on the grounds of the newly dedicated Billy Graham Library, adjacent to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association's headquarters in Charlotte, the organization said in a news release. Ruth Graham died Thursday at age 87.
She was buried in a casket built by prisoners at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola who wanted to give a pair of simple plywood coffins to the Grahams as an expression of their Christian faith, the statement said.
"The Bible says the Lord has prepared a place for us and I know he has prepared a home for her -- I hope she saves a room for me," her longtime pastor, the Rev. Richard White, said during the ceremony.
