Historic steamship wreckage discovered
by UPI

VERMILION, Ohio - Divers have discovered the wreckage of a steamship that sank in April 1850 eight miles off the coast of Vermilion, Ohio.

The divers, from the Great Lakes Historical Society and the Cleveland Underwater Explorers group, discovered the historic ship, dubbed the General Anthony Wayne, 50 feet below the surface of the water, the Elyria (Ohio) Chronicle-Telegram reported Thursday.

"It's an incredibly historic find," said Chris Gillcrist, executive director of the Great Lakes Historical Society. "It's one of the ships that we have been looking for, and it's amazing to have found it."

The 156-foot passenger and freight ship sank after one of its boilers exploded during a voyage from Sandusky to Cleveland. Thirty-eight of the 93 people on board the ship are believed to have been killed when the ship sank.

Tom Kowalczk, of the Cleveland Underwater Explorers group, said divers had found no evidence to support long-standing rumors that the ship was full of gold when it sank.
