Activists say hot water causing algae
by UPI

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Environmental activists allege heated water from a Massachusetts power plant is causing outbreaks of toxic blue-green algae on the Charles River.

The Charles River Watershed Association and the Conservation Law Foundation are calling for a tougher discharge permit for the Mirant Kendall power plant in Cambridge, The Boston Globe said Wednesday.

The newspaper said millions of gallons of water from the river is used each day to cool the turbines of the natural-gas-powered plant. The water is discharged at temperatures of up to 105 degrees.

Environmentalists say the heating of the water could be one of several factors contributing to the growth of the algae, along with sunlight and elevated levels of phosphorus, the newspaper said.
