Iowa watch
by The San Diego Union-Tribune

When did Iowa become a border state?

The answer would seem to be about 10 years ago. That is when the state began to experience a dramatic growth in its Hispanic population due to the arrival of thousands of immigrant workers, many of them in the country illegally. The newcomers were initially drawn to the meatpacking industry, where you find the sort of hard and dirty jobs that many Americans are not interested in doing at any wage. From there, the immigrants did what earlier waves of immigrants did before them - drifted to jobs in hotels, restaurants, construction firms and other industries.

Of course, the overall number of Hispanic residents in Iowa is still relatively small, but it's the growth in that population that has many people concerned. According to census data, the Hispanic population of Iowa grew more than 150 percent in the 1990s.

With those changes, a number of towns in Iowa are experiencing a change in their culture, and that is always worrisome to some people. In fact, it's that concern over the effect that immigrants have on the culture, not economics or border security, that drives much of the debate.

Just ask the presidential candidates in both parties. The Iowa caucuses are just a few weeks away and everywhere the candidates go in the state, they get asked what they would do to end illegal immigration. Good luck with that, folks. Here on the actual border, we have a more realistic understanding of the problem and what it takes to address it.

What the candidates should say whenever they're asked this is that Iowans played a big role in creating the situation about which they now complain, and that the best way for a community to take a stand against illegal immigration is to stop hiring illegal immigrants or turning a blind eye to those who do.

Beyond that, the arrival of the immigration issue on the Iowa political landscape also presents challenges not just for those running for president but also for those in the news media who are trying to cover the story.

For instance, one narrative you hear often is that the immigration issue is tough sledding for Republicans. That's true. But the issue is no less difficult for Democrats, who are trying to keep together under one umbrella supporters from the Hispanic and African-American communities, organized labor and liberals who, on this issue, sound like conservatives.

There is also an interesting wrinkle in the fact that two candidates who are doing especially well in Iowa - Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee - have what can be described as liberal views on illegal immigration, the very issue on which we're told by the media that voters are demanding a more conservative tone.

How about that? What in the world is going on in Iowa? Stay tuned. With the caucuses approaching, we're about to find out.

  • Amnesty is RACIST AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL. 1. Our immigration law has a base line of family reunification with roughly proportional number of places for Americans of the the various races and ethnic backgrounds. 2. Amnesty would be approximately 90% Hispanic. 3. Amnesty would give a HUGE PREFERENCE to Hispanics over other Americans with resepect to family reunification and bringing in their race and ethnic group. This is DISCRIMINATION. Americans are entitled to EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAW. 4. Amnesty would give a HUGE PREFERENCE ot Hispanics over other Americans with respect to the ability to take advantage of the amnesty for their family and ethnic group, as Mexico is next door. Other Americans have to get their family here on expensive flights, somehow escape through the airport etc - much more difficult. And even Latinos who are not Mexico have trouble getting in as they get stopped at the Mexican border. THIS IS DISCRIMINATION. Americans are entitled to EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAW. 5. Amnesty would give a HUGE PREFERENCE to Hispanics over other Americans / LEGAL IMMIGRANTS as Legal Immigrants have to meet much more difficult conditions, ie medical, learn USA history, background check, and presumably no felony. Any illegal in the USA working is probably guilty of ID theft, a felony and should never be admitted to the USA. THIS IS DISCRIMINATION. Americans are entitled to EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAW. 6. Politicians want it in order to increase their voting block, which is RACIST AND violates the EQUAL PROTECTION OF THE LAW CLAUSE. AMNESTY IS RACIST, VIOLATES THE CONSTITUTION, & THE EQUAL PROTECTION CLAUSE The real agenda here is the creation of a North American Union. But rathter than take it to the people, the "elite" are trying to hide it from Americans and "sneak it by us". Read David Broder's article last week where he criticizes Lou Dobbs for screwing it all up; the "elite" had a bipartisan agreement on free trade and NAFTA, and per Border is is making the USA rich. He forgot to mention it is making the few rich and dissemiating the poor and middle class American, and destroying our language and culture. Check out Jeff Hoard's blog on it. He put together some videos showing our politicians lying through their teeth about the North American Highway. Check out Judicial Watch. They have one set of documents from a meeting discussing infrastructure integration and mentioning open borders, and another document which says that as Americans will resist North American integration it has to be set up in secret and implemented by "evolution steath". That is why Bush opened the borders and let the illegals flood in. That is why Bush has pushed for the North American Highway while denying it exists. That is why Bush is pushing for Mexcian trucking in the USA. That is why Bush passed the the fence law then did not fund it, and keeps border guard to a minimu, That is why Bush still has not forced employers to comply with the 1986 or 1996 law re illegals. That is why Bush and all lthe media elite keep pushing amnesty. The rumor is that Bush agreed to open border by 2010. That is why President Callderon of Mexico ever couple of weeks, tells our Presidential candidates what to do, and is pushing his consulates to interefer with USA affaires. That is why President Calderon about a month ago said any where Mexicans are is Mexico, there is no border, and Mexicans have the right to live and work in the USA. That is why the media is playing games with the polls. Before the vote on Bush's amnesty bill, the media was touting one poll saying that the majority of Americans were for it. Problem was, the poll actaully said was only 24% of Americans were for it. Often the newspaper cite a poll without giving a name. Each time I have attempted to find out from the journalilst what the poll was, no answer. Or they cite a name of a poll and when I check on line, the poll does not deal with immigration at all. WATCH OUT FOLKS... if you see a poll described, google the poll and read it yourself to see if the media is misrepresenting it. That is why there is NO REACTION from this sort of interference from Calderon by Bush or any other politician. No way Mexico can be part of the NAU until it becomes a first world country. In Europe, Spain and Greece had to clean up their acts before they could enter. Otherwise the third world slum will turn the other countries into slums as the people flow like water downhill from the poor area to the rich area. But the rich countries cannot subsidize all the poor folk - they hae to create their own wealth. But the liberal media and our politiicans are too dumb to understand that.
