Multi-lane Roundabouts
by Tara White, Bend

The city’s plan for multi-lane roundabouts on Reed Market Road should make for some interesting traffic accidents.  Nobody signals their intent to exit out of our existing single-lane roundabouts – and yes, you ARE supposed to signal your intent to leave the roundabout.  Some people get up a pretty good speed going around them, and I find myself sitting there with feet poised over both the brake and the gas at the same time, trying to gauge whether the driver is going to turn off or barrel on by.

Add another lane or two to these circular intersections, and there will be fender benders galore.

  • Having begun my driving in Mexico City and later lived in several foreign countries, all of which make extensive use of multi-lane roundabouts, I think I have sufficient experience to comment on this. A roundabout is essentially a continuous merge lane. But it does not work if there is only one lane. It becomes a stop-and-go section. Multi-lane roundabouts work well, and speed up the flow of traffic, provided drivers are intelligent enough to use them right. Americans pride themselves on their intelligence. Are we ready to give up on roundabouts and admit that people in 3rd world countries are better drivers?

  • Concerning the round-about . Before you decide send some one to St.George Utah and see this costly mistake that is being torn up starting in Dec. Wrecks and traffic jams have the cars and trucks stalled all the way to the freeway . Tempers flare, and cost for the city trying to take care of this mess is unreal, while the "rich" designers are off to the next city with their sales pitch . If you are facing any growth in the future ,come on down , take a look and save yourself lots of money and headaches in the future, that is unless your tax payers prefer beauty instead of savings . Put the beauty in the parks where you can enjoy it . I recall seeing one round-about in your city last year . How is it working out ? Virginia Hanna
