Public meeting slated for projects to reduce fire danger
by Bend Weekly News Sources

BEND, Oregon — Deschutes National Forest managers will hold a public meeting February 28 to solicit input on three Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District proposed projects that will reduce wildland fire danger near Bend and Sunriver within the community wildfire protection zone areas on Forest Service lands.

All three projects are proposing to implement direction contained within the Sunriver and Greater Bend Community Wildfire Protection Plans.

The projects are adjacent to private land or along emergency evacuation routes south and west of Bend and northeast of Sunriver.  They include work such as controlled burns, mechanical mowing, chainsaw thinning and commercial timber harvests that will reduce brush and woody debris that can feed fires.

The meeting will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at the Bend/Fort Rock Ranger Station at Red Oaks Square, 1230 N.E. Third St. in Bend.  Project managers will be available to answer questions about the projects’ location, size and types of treatments.

They will also discuss timber hauling operations that might occur through Neighboring subdivisions.

For additional information, telephone Deschutes National Forest Planner Gery Ferguson at (541) 383-5538.
