Second pedestrian safety sting planned in Prineville

PRINEVILLE, Ore. -- The Prineville Police Department will be conducting a second Pedestrian Safety Operation on August 30, 2007 between 7 a.m. and noon at the intersections of NE Third and NE Court Streets, and NE Third and NW Garner Streets.

A similar sting operation was held on August 16 at North Main & NE 6th Street, and North Main & NW 1st Street.

Warning signs will be posted prior to entering the Pedestrian Safety Operation area. A member of the Prineville Police Department, in plain clothes, will act as a decoy. “Please use caution as you enter the Pedestrian Safety zone,” Chief Eric Bush reminds.

Pedestrians should always look both ways before entering a crosswalk, and drivers should adjust their speeds in congested areas where pedestrian traffic can be high.

“Please remember,” Bush asks, “pedestrians have the right-of-way”.

Once a vehicle has stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, they are to remain stopped until the pedestrian clears the roadway.

“Remember school is only a few weeks away, so use caution during schools hours near crosswalks,” the Chief added.

Failure to yield to a pedestrian (ORS. 811.010) is a class B violation with a fine of
