Lynch Elementary promotes reading, implements incentives
by Bend Weekly News Sources

Redmond, Oregon In an effort to promote reading at M.A. Lynch Elementary School in Redmond, the third-grade teachers implemented an incentive program for students.  For every two accelerated reading books a student reads and for which they are able to pass a test with 80% accuracy or better, they are given a chance to win a prize.

This incentive program originated from an offer from Bud Nielson, Masonic Grand Lodge of Oregon, to join them in their Bikes for Books program to help encourage reading in schools.

Forty-nine students participated and have the opportunity to win certificates generously donated from Dominos, Pappy's Pizza, Hollywood Video and McDonalds.  A grand prize of a new bike/helmet, donated by the Masonic Grand Lodge of Oregon and Redmond Police Department, will be awarded to one lucky student.  Prizes were announced Thursday, April 12, in the Lynch Library.

"This is our first year of doing this collaborated reading incentive program and we appreciate the support of Bud and the community,” states Cindy Gibson, Lynch Elementary teacher.  “We are really hoping that this will encourage more reading for our third graders."

“We would like to thank all of the local businesses that donated contributions for prizes to help support reading.”
