In comparison with 2007, Oregon State Police troopers reported a decrease in the number of drunk-driving arrests made during Super Bowl weekend this year. 23 drivers were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, 13 which were arrested after noon on Sunday. Last year, 42 DUII arrests were made.
Troopers also reported an increase in deaths from car crashes with five persons killed in four separate crashes this weekend. Last year, OSP and ODOT said, two persons died and the year before, six persons lost their lives.
The following is a brief review of the four known fatal crashes during the weekend:
* On Saturday afternoon, February 2, OSP investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 237 in the La Grande area that resulted in the death of one person. Icy roadway conditions were noted as a possible contributing factor.
* On Saturday night, February 2, OSP investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 101 near Hebo that resulted in the death of one person. Speed and icy roadway conditions were noted as possible contributing factors.
* On Sunday, February 3, Linn County Sheriff's Office investigated a fatal crash on Gap Road at Ranch Road that reportedly resulted in one fatality.
* On Sunday night, February 3, OSP investigated a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 6 near Banks that resulted in the death of two people, including the pregnant driver. Icy roadway conditions are noted as a possible contributing factor.
