Portland man arrested in attempted murder over basketball game
by Cheryl McDermott

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ore. -- A 21-year old Portland man was arrested Wednesday and charged with the attempted murder of his friend after he allegedly shot him following an argument over a heated basketball game they had played at Somerset Park.

Washington County Sheriff’s Sgt. Vance Stimler said that deputies were called to the park at 18300 SW Park View in an unincorporated area of Washington County, Oregon, about 4:15 p.m., March 19, in response to a report of shots fired.

Deputies found Marvin Rains, 20, shot in the leg. Rains was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Stimler reported.

Preliminary investigation determined that Rains and another man had been driven to the park by Joseph Tedrick, 21, for an afternoon of playing basketball. Apparently the game became physical and “words were exchanged”, the sergeant said. Tedrick drove away, leaving Rains and the other man at the park.

Tedrick returned to the park a short time later after having realized he’d left behind some personal items, but when he went to collect them found out that Rains had reportedly thrown his property into some bushes.

“A second argument ensued,” Stimler said, and Rains allegedly returned to his vehicle, retrieved a gun, and shot Rains before fleeing the scene.

Tedrick was arrested and lodged in the Washington County Jail. He was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon, the sergeant reported.
