SANTIAM PASS, ORE. -- One person was killed and five others were injured Saturday afternoon in a two vehicle collision in the Santiam Pass area on Highway 22E in Linn County, Oregon State Police (OSP) reported.
According to troopers, Leo Gilleran, 66, of Mt. Vernon, lost control of his pickup on the ice and snow covered roadway while traveling west near milepost 78 about 12:30 p.m., February 14. His Dodge Dakota crossed broadside into the oncoming lane and was struck on the passenger side by a Chevrolet Suburban.
Leo Gilleran was seriously injured and air-transported to St. Charles Medical Center (SCMC) in Bend. Gilleran’s wife and passenger, 61-year old Sandra Gilleran, was pronounced deceased at the scene, OSP said.
Four occupants of the Suburban received minor injuries and were transported to SCMC by ambulance. They were identified as Brett Adams of Dallas, Oregon, 49; Karen Adams, 50; Samuel Adams, 17; and Austin Boatman, 16.
According to an OSP news release, eastbound lanes of traffic on Highway 22E were closed for about 4 ½ hours, and an investigation led by OSP troopers from the Bend and Salem command offices is continuing.
