Police say man beat wife to death with hammer
by Bend Weekly News Sources

BEAVERTON, Ore. – Police say a frantic phone call from a daughter led to the discovery of her dead mother, allegedly beaten to death with a hammer early Sunday morning by her husband because she was planning to leave him.

According to a news release issued by the Beaverton Police Department, police responded to the home of the victim, Nabintu Kalamba, 49, and the suspect, her husband, 51-year old Namegabe Mushegero, at 6155 SW King Boulevard shortly after 1 a.m., March 16.

The couple’s daughter, Ahadi Kelekele, 24, had called police after she was awakened by her two younger brothers screaming upstairs and witnessed, “in utter shock”, her father attack her mother with a hammer.

Police found Kalamba deceased, and after interviewing Mushegero arrested him for murder. The suspect told police that he beat his wife with the hammer because she was going to leave him, the news release stated.

Detectives were unable to find any history of previous domestic violence, and the investigation by Beaverton Police Detectives and the Washington County Forensics Team is continuing. Family members are caring for the couple’s children, police said.

Mushegero was lodged at the Washington County Jail without bail, as is the policy for all Measure 11 crimes. His arraignment is set for Tuesday, March 17, at 3 p.m.
