Gresham driver killed in Highway 26 collision
by Richard Burton

A Gresham-area woman died and another person received non-life threatening injuries Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 26 and SE 267th Avenue east of Gresham, Oregon State Police (OSP) reported.

Joanne Slaughter was killed, and Candie Marie Masser received minor injuries in a two-vehicle crash at Highway 26 & 267th Avenue east of Gresham Thursday morning. OSP photos.

Joanne Slaughter, 52, of southeast Gresham was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Troopers responded to a report of an accident about 8:45 a.m. February 15.  Preliminary investigation showed that Slaughter’s 2002 Toyota Camry was stopped on the north side of Highway 26 on SE 267th Avenue before she pulled across the westbound lanes of the highway and her vehicle was struck in the driver’s side by an SUV.

The SUV, a 2000 Ford Explorer, was driven by 39-year old Candie Marie Masser of Sandy.  Masser received minor injuries, and was transported by a Gresham Fire Department ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

Both drivers were using safety restraints, and the airbags in their vehicles deployed, OSP reported.

Both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of Highway 26 -- reportedly wet with rain at the time of the accident -- were closed for over three hours, troopers said.

OSP troopers from Government Camp and Portland offices are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the an interagency crash investigation team comprised of officers from Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Gresham Police Department, and Troutdale Police Department.
