Governor orders flags at half-staff in memory of Oregon soldier
by Bend Weekly News Sources

Flags to be lowered Friday, March 30, 2007 in honor of Sgt. Nicholas J. Lightner

This week Governor Ted Kulongoski ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff today in memory of Sgt. Nicholas J. Lightner, of Newport, Oregon.

Sgt. Nicholas J. Lightner

Lightner, 29, died Wednesday, March 21, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near his unti while on combat patrol March 15 in Baghdad, Iraq.

Sgt. Lightner was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

“Nicholas served his country and his state with great honor and compassion,” said Governor Kulongoski. “As a medic and a soldier, he always put the health and safety of others first.  He will be missed by his friends and family and always remembered for his ultimate sacrifice by the citizens of Oregon.”
