Traffic stop leads to pot bust
by Bend Weekly News Sources

Two California residents, a 20-year old man and 17-year-old boy, were arrested Monday evening during a traffic stop for speeding on Interstate 5 near Rice Hill in northern Douglas County when troopers found over two pounds of marijuana and $2,000 cash in their vehicle, Oregon State Police (OSP) reported.

Trooper Brian Assmus was parked on the northbound shoulder of I-5 near milepost 145 about 7 p.m., April 2, when he clocked a 1994 Ford Escort speeding at 86-mph.  Assmus followed the car and conducted a traffic stop near milepost 148.

When the trooper was speaking with the vehicle occupants -- driver Sean Richard Holbrook, 20, of Redway, Calif., and a 17-year old male juvenile from Zenia, Calif. – he detected an odor of marijuana.  Holbrook opened the glove compartment and handed the trooper a pipe and a small amount of marijuana, troopers reported, and admitted there was more in the trunk.  After Holbrook opened the trunk and was moving personal items around, Assmus saw more than one ounce of pot.

Hokbrook was taken into custody and the juvenile detained.  When troopers searched the car more thoroughly, they allegedly discovered 2.2 pounds of marijuana in a duffle bag and other evidence including over $2,000 cash.

Holbrook was lodged in the Douglas County Jail for manufacturing, possession and delivery of marijuana, in addition to endangering the welfare of a minor.

The 17-year-old is being detained in the county juvenile detention center, and is also charged with manufacturing, possession and delivery of marijuana.
