Teen charged with attempted murder in school shooting
by Cheryl McDermott

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder in connection with a shooting at Springwater Trail High School in Gresham, Oregon on Tuesday, police reported.

Gresham Police officers responded to the high school at 1440 SE Fleming in Gresham about 2:10 p.m., April 10, to a report of the sound of a gunshot.  A top-floor window on the south side of the school had been shattered, and an immediate lockdown of both Springwater Trail High School and nearby Hogan Cedars Elementary School was initiated.

Site of the shooting:  Springwater Trail High School in Gresham, Oregon
Two students required transport to Mount Hood Medical Center for minor lacerations caused by the breaking glass, and eight others were injured but received emergency medical treatment on site by school personnel, police said.

All students were eventually evacuated by police and school officials and placed on school buses where they were met by parents at a designated location.

A witness told police that they saw a young male leaving the scene shortly after hearing the gunshot, and while officers were at the school they received a call from the parent of the boy accused of the shooting.

Chad Antonio Escobedo’s parent told police they believed their son was responsible for the incident, and officers went to Escobedo’s home and detained the teen for questioning.

Escobedo was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder and transported to the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Facility.

Escobedo admitted he left the weapon, later identified as a .270 caliber rifle, on or near the school grounds.  SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) personnel were called in to search the area, and found the weapon.
