Illegal turkey hunters sought by police
by Bend Weekly News Sources

The Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division is asking for the public's help in locating the person or persons responsible for the unlawful take and waste of turkeys near Baker City. A reward is offered for information related to this case.

Two hens and one tom turkey with only breast meat removed were found dumped in garbage bags off Grey Eagle Mine Road near Baker City. A $400 reward is offered - OSP photo
On April 19, 2007, OSP Fish & Wildlife Division Senior Trooper Chris Hawkins responded to a report of two plastic garbage bags containing turkeys dumped off Grey Eagle Mine Road near Baker City. Hawkins located the garbage bags that contained two hens and one tom turkey, all shot with only the breast meat removed.

The season bag limit for spring turkey is two male turkeys or turkeys with a visible beard. It is unlawful to waste any edible portion of a game bird.

OSP is requesting public assistance in identifying the person(s) responsible. A $400 reward is offered by the Turkey Federation and Oregon Hunter's Association Turn in Poachers (TIP) Program for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Anyone with information regarding this case can contact Senior Trooper Hawkins at the OSP Baker City office at 541-523-5867, or the TIP line at 1-800-452-7888. Callers may remain anonymous.

OSP would also like to remind all turkey hunters who will be hunting for a second turkey to purchase a second general spring turkey tag to hunt in eastern Oregon. The BONUS turkey tag is only good in Douglas, Coos, Curry, Josephine, Jackson, Lane, Linn, Benton, Polk, and Marion counties.
