Five injured when motorhome runs red light, hits three cars & Pizza Pit
by Bend Weekly News Sources

The driver of a motorhome was transported by air ambulance with critical injuries, and four others were taken to the hospital by ambulance after the driver ran a red light, crashed into two vehicles, then ran into a Pizza Pit and another parked car, police reported.

Just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, a 2000 Century motorhome towing a Jeep failed to stop at a traffic light as it approached the intersection with Highway 46 on Highway 199 near Cave Junction, Oregon State police said in a news release.

The motorhome, driven by 64-year old Livermore, California resident William E. Mohler ran into a 2004 BMW stopped in the right lane, and a 1996 Nissan Sentra stopped in the left lane.

After impact, the RV crossed both southbound lanes and crashed into a pizza restaurant at 316 S. Reedwood Highway.  An unoccupied 2005 Subaru in the parking lot was also hit, OSP reported.

Mohler was transported by Mercy Flights to Rogue Valley Medical Center with reportedly critical injuries.  Police say he may be transferred by air to a Portland-area hospital.

Three motorhome passengers, two of whom received serious injuries, were transported by American Medical Response ambulance to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

Audrey Miller, 82, of Cave Junction, and the driver of the Nissan Sentra, was also taken to Three Rivers Hospital.

The driver of the BMW, Michael R. Anderson, 56, and his passenger Claudia Anderson, 50, of Medford, declined medical treatment.

According to the OSP news release,  troopers from Grants Pass and Central Point are continuing the crash investigation.  Assistance at the scene provided by Josephine County Sheriff's Office, US Forest Service Law Enforcement, American Medical Response, Illinois Valley Fire Department, and Cave Junction Public Works / Road Department.

  • A red light cam was activated at RT7 and Towlston Rd. in Fairfax County VA on 10/1/2000. RT7 and Towlston Rd. was a notoriously dangerous intersection. After nine months of dismal cam results, the yellow lights were secretly increased one half second. What uninformed people call "red light running" dropped about 70 percent as a result. Although much better for safety, the yellow lights were still inadequate. After twenty additional months of cam enforcement and again dismal results to show for it, the yellow lights were secretly increased a second time, this time to 5.50 seconds (where they should have been from the beginning). "Red light running" dropped to almost nothing and the cam plug was eventually pulled. Real safety was improved. Notwithstanding, red light cam officials told the public the camera "worked" .... concealing the facts about the lights when doing so. The thing to keep in mind is that red light cameras tend to proliferate in places with inadequate yellow lights, a defect officials have a duty to fix. Unfortunately, the red light cam$ typically get in the way. I do not know details about the accident noted but all such accidents are sad. Officials should examine all relevant factors that might have been involved, including the lights. BY the way, when the cam was first activated at RT7 and Towlston Rd., red light cam officials claimed the yellow lights were fine. But records show that nothing could have been further from the truth.

  • I seriously have to correct myself regarding my above posts. I have been referring to Bill Mohler as Bob. My sincere apologies for mis-speaking, and as stated before, I wish Bill et. al. the best and continue to pray for their recovery.

  • Um, yes I do know what happened and I was there. I saw Bob's DNA on the street and I watched people carefully tend to him till he could be flown to the hospital. Still such hate, and how sad and this is from the daughter of one of the passengers who was lucky to survive thanks to the Cave Junction "garbage." If my loved ones had been in that vehicle and surived, I'd be thanking God and the people of Cave Junction, rather than spewing hate. I'm sure Bob knows how to drive a motorhome; so does my dad. However NOBODY knows exactly what "failed" unless you're a professional inspecting the motorhome. So, lets ask in all honestly, WHO hurt Bob, his passengers, people in the other vehicles and the property? WHO ran the light (regardless of brakes, intentional, whatever). OH, lets blame the Editor! If Bob were a family member of mine, I'd spend more time being thankful that he and his passengers and other innocent people survived, rather than bashing people commenting on the havoc the motorhome incident created. Bottom line is that the motorhome went through the light, whether intional or not, brakes failing, whatever it may end up being. I feel for Bob; I want Bob to be ok. I resent anyone spewing hatred to the people of the town who saved his life. Did you retrieve Bob from the motorhome or clean the street of DNA and debris? It's a shame people who claim involvement are still in denial and so bitter. Myself, I'd be doing the "im not worthy" and just be thankful. I witnessed the carnage, the heroics, the bubbling brain and facial tissue. Bob would be just a grease spot in the road if not for the people here. Brakes Brakes Brakes! Be thankful you're here for petes sake! The motorhome caused the accident brakes or not!

  • HEY lT - I COULD GIVE A SH!T ABOUT BILL'S CHARACTER. FOR ALL I CARE - HE COULD DIE AND NOBODY WOULD CARE IN OREGON. I SAY HE RAN THE RED LIGHT AND SO DOES THE POLICE. WHETHER OR NOT HIS BRAKES FAILED IS NOT THE ISSUE. MAYBE THE CHEAP BASTARD SHOULD HAVE GONE TO MIDAS?

  • I too know Bill Mohler personally. He is an incredibly skilled pilot who thought nothing of his own safety during this horrific accident, only how to safely stop his crippled motorhome with no brakes, minimizing the injuries to his passengers and others involved. The people of your City are amazing and were obviously concerned and very helpful. Thanks to all who were there and took care of the injured. Some of the comments below can't possibly be representative of the majority of the citizens of Cave Junction; it was simply an accident involving a mechanical failure. The driver is a hero who was seriously injured while others all around came away with relatively minor injuries. Those of you who don't know the difference as reflected in some of the comments below - take your toys and go home and try to get a better attitude. If you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything at all.

  • There is not one person commenting on here that knows what happened or knows anything about Bill Mohler and the others involved in this accident. Now there is. I am the daughter of two of the passengers in that motorhome and I've also known Bill and Nancy Mohler my entire life. That man knew how to drive a motorhome despite being from California you piece of garbage. You know nothing of this man or his character and it would be in your best interest to not comment on something or someone you know nothing about. The brakes failed and that is the bottom line. Bill did everything he could to manuver that vehicle to a safe place because he was thinking. He was thinking about the people around him and the passengers he was carrying. So until you've been in that situation nobody here has any right to comment on how he handled the situation. Think about yourselves and if you were related to the people involved in this horrible accident and how you would feel if you were to come on a site like this and read crap like what some of you have written. I appreciate those of you that commented in a favorable way towards Bill Mohler. He is one of the most incredible men I've ever met in my life and it's a shame that none of you know him. Thank you to each and every one of the citizens of Cave Junction that were so kind and so brave and helped save the lives of four very important people in my life.

  • HEY BOB - YOU MUST BE ONE OF THOSE SCUMBAG AMBULANCE CHASING ATTORNIES FROM CALI... YOU DON'T KNOW SH!T BUDDY, CUZ YOU WEREN'T THERE. JUST ABOUT EVERY ARTICLE I'VE READ REGARDING THIS BAD DRIVER, SAID THE DUDE RAN A RED LIGHT. SO SHUT YOUR TRAP YOU FRAUD AND GO BACK TO BEATING YOUR UGLY LADY BOY WIFE.--------------------------------- NOW THATS LIABLE..... IF YOU LIKE, YOU CAN SUE ME. ---------------- LOVE ME BENDEHO

  • Holy crap.....such animosity from the readers on this site. I'm glad the people of Cave Junction who came to the rescue of the motor home driver (without caring where he was from) weren't so nasty. The man who pulled Mr. Mohler from the motorhome lives across the street from me and was one of the first on scene. He never mentioned that he cared whether Mr. Mohler "WENT" through a light happened to be from California. If my neighbor and the dozens of people that helped in this disaster had the attitude of some posting here, Mr. Mohler and his passengers (and the passengers of other vehicles involved) might have not survived. Cave Junction truly has wonderful people (mostly ex-Californians - go figure) who do not and did not hesitate to help people in need. Bottom line - the motorhome WENT through a red light and it is unknown why. Unless you have checked the motorhome out or are an investigating officer, its pure speculation, and again I am not placing blame. I haven't seen anyone pointing fingers but i do see some disturbingly angry posts, which is quite ironic given the circumstances. How many of you were actually here at the time of the accident to witness the accident, aftermath AND the heroic actions of the citizens of Cave Junction? I was. I'm with Stephanie. Lets be thankful because it could have been much worse. Only one employee on duty at the Pizza Pit and she, for some reason left the kitchen area at just the right time. The drivers of the other vehicles involved were treated and released. And last but not least, lets not forget the fireworks tent which was very, very close by and untouched. And just a friendly reminder, we lost two teenagers here in a tragic car accident less than a month ago and are still healing from that. Usually in tragic situations like this, people lose the bitterness and are thankful and appreciative of kind and caring people.

  • Hey, Bob. You're obviously looking for something to complain about. It doesn't say "intentionally ran" a red light, and it clearly says "failed to stop" and that the accident is still under investigation. How about someone saying 'he ran a red light when his brakes failed'? Running a red light doesn't infer intent or culpability - it means he went through the damn light without stopping. There is obviously no malice aforethought that seeks to defame or libel anyone. Take a chill pill ...
  • (Posted on July 7, 2007, 1:25 pm Not as petty as Bob)

  • "Running" a red light indicates criminal intent, or at least makes the driver sound culpable. It behooves you to be cautious, as such comment could leave you open to a libel suit. Simply stated, the driver failed to stop for whatever reason. Could be mechanical or medical.

  • To the guy that posted about Bill being a bad driver. You are an idiot my friend! He lost his brakes! Friggin SOFA moron!
  • (Posted on July 6, 2007, 11:07 am Jim)

  • It is a miracle that Bill survived? How about the other innocent people that he hit? Do they not count? You Californians are such selfish and worthless pieces of crap.... "Bill" shouldn't be driving a RV he can't obviously handle in a state that he does NOT live in. I hope the Oregonians (victims) "Bill" hit/rammed with his RV, sues the crap out of him.

  • I can not believe that someone could post such a ridiculous comment about insurance. It is a miracle that Bill survived. We are all praying that he makes it through this crisis.

  • Wow!.. That RV exploded. I hope they had good insurance;) RVingKing
