LONDON -- A British court heard that a surrogate mother deliberately deceived two couples into believing she had a miscarriage so she could keep their children.
The woman, identified only as Mrs. P, conceived using sperm from two men on separate occasions after agreeing to carry the children, The Daily Mail reported Wednesday.
The woman falsely told the families she had miscarried their children in order to allow her to keep the babies.
However, Mrs. P's 19-year-old daughter told the surrogacy agency of her mother's plans and the two fathers discovered they had children.
One of the men was told he had a 4-year-old daughter but decided not to seek custody. He entered an agreement with Mrs. P that the girl would eventually be told of her true parentage and he would be allowed to be an influence in her life.
The court awarded custody of the second child, an infant boy, to his father and his wife.
The judge in the case said Mrs. P and her husband were driven by "a desperate desire to parent more children by fair means, or failing that, foul."
