Refugees found in Swedish army truck
by UPI

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- German police are investigating how 24 people were smuggled aboard a Swedish army truck traveling from Serbia and disembarked near Nuremberg.

The truck was driven by a contractor shuttling spare parts and mail between Sweden and a military base in Serbia's embattled Kosovo province, Sweden's The Local newspaper reported.

The truck driver said he stopped to check the load and suddenly 24 people scattered from the truck. Police in Germany are reportedly skeptical and looking into whether the driver was part of a paid people smuggling ring, the report said.

All who fled the truck -- 21 Iraqis, two Afghans and a Pakistani -- applied for asylum in Germany, police said.

Olle Schylander, head of logistics for the Swedish Armed Forces, told the TT news agency it was major embarrassment for the forces.

"This is not good whatever way you look at it," Schylander said. "The army is going to have to review its procedures and the companies it employs after this."
