WARSAW, Poland - Polish border police arrested 19 Vietnamese and three other people trying to get to Western Europe.
The 18 Vietnamese men and one woman made up the biggest group of illegal immigrants detained by Polish border police this year, Polish Radio said Thursday.
Police said the Vietnamese had no documents or money. They were arrested in the Bieszczady mountain area in southeastern Poland after illegally crossing from Ukraine.
Each of the Vietnamese paid $5,000 for the illegal trip, the report said.
The group was herded by two Ukrainians across the border, and a Pole was waiting to take them in a minivan to central Poland en route to a Western European country.
It was unclear whether the Vietnamese would be granted asylum in Poland or deported home.
The two Ukrainians and the Pole could be jailed for five years for organizing human trafficking, the radio said.
