No bail for roommate charged with murder
by UPI

PERUGIA, Italy -- A judge in Italy denied bail Friday for a young U.S. woman and her Italian boyfriend accused of killing her roommate.

Amanda Knox, brought into court in handcuffs, denied participating in the stabbing of Meredith Kercher, The Telegraph reported. She apologized for making accusations against another suspect, Patrick Lumumba, who owns a bar in Perugia.

"I confirm I am innocent," she told the court in a tearful statement. "I am sorry for Patrick and for the whole situation."

Kercher, a student at the University of Leeds who was spending a year studying in Perugia, was stabbed in the bedroom of a house she shared with Knox and two other women. Postal police found the body after tracing a lost cell phone to the address and also found Knox there with her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, a student from Bari.

Knox, a native of Seattle, is a student at the University of Washington.

While Knox and Sollecito remain in jail, Lumumba has been released. A fourth suspect, Rudy Hermann Guede of the Ivory Coast, was arrested in Germany.
