WARSAW, Poland -- Polish prosecutors are investigating allegations janitors at a nursing home outside Warsaw mistreated elderly women verbally and physically.
Janitors in the Radosc private home for women allegedly mistreated patients for a long period until cell phone recordings of the ugly scenes were handed over to the Polska daily, Polish Radio said Wednesday.
Lukasz K., a conscientious objector serving his military term by doing community service work at the home, recorded the abuse, showing janitors beating and kicking female patients, pulling their hair and calling them names.
At night, elderly women, many of them senile, were tied to their beds so they could not remove incontinence pads. Mentally retarded patients were referred to as "idiots" and "swine."
The manager of the home denied allegations of abuse and use of force. Doctors and a visiting priest said they noted nothing suspicious, the report said.
