GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba -- A prisoner at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility cut his throat seriously with a sharpened fingernail, U.S. military officials say.
Commander Andrew Haynes told The New York Times the man lost a substantial loss of blood but was never at risk of dying.
Haynes said there have been four to six cases in which detainees have harmed themselves in recent months. One detainee committed suicide in May, the newspaper said.
Guantanamo critics say the incidents show the desperation of the detainees, while officials at the facility say the incidents are just a way of seeking publicity.
Officials this week said nine detainees remain on hunger strikes.
