Probe begins in crash landing at Heathrow
by UPI

LONDON -- Investigators are looking into what caused a British Airways plane to land short of a runway at London Heathrow Airport, shredding the plane's undercarriage.

One investigator said the plane's captain "is claiming there wasn't power when he needed it," CNN reported.

London ambulance services said at least 17 people received minor injuries.

BA flight 38 from Beijing carrying 136 passengers and 16 crew was grounded on the tarmac after touching down several hundred feet short of Heathrow's south runway. Its emergency chutes deployed and emergency vehicles ringed the plane.

The undercarriage, left wing and left engine of the aircraft were severely damaged, and at least one of the plane's wheels had been torn off.

Britain's Air Accident Investigation Branch will lead the inquiry into the crash landing. A team from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is heading to London, accompanied by representatives from Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The incident led to major delays for passengers. Some incoming flights were diverted to other airports on a flight-by-flight basis, according to Heathrow's Web site.
