MUMBAI - An overcrowded bus carrying Hindu pilgrims in India went off a cliff and fell into a gorge near Mumbai, killing at least 38 people.
The Press Trust of India reported 12 women and four children were among the dead. At least 40 more, including the driver, were injured in the Sunday night incident.
The report said the bus was returning from a Hindu shrine in Nasik district when the accident occurred. Police and other officials said the driver lost control of the vehicle on a sharp bend, causing it to skid and plunge into the gorge several hundred feet below.
"The private luxury bus was overloaded and was carrying 76 people. According to the survivors, the driver had been driving the bus since the last four days," a police official said.
The injured, some of them in critical condition, were taken to a local hospital.
