Britain's Brown supports India's U.N. bid
by UPI

NEW DELHI - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Monday gave support to India's efforts in seeking a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

"I am pleased to announce that we support the membership of India in the United Nations Security Council and reforms of the Security Council for the future," the British leader told a news conference in New Delhi, the Press Trust of India reported.

Brown, accompanied by his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh, said the two agreed international institutions should be reformed to deal with 21st-century challenges and "to ensure that there are more representatives of the new global order."

The BBC reported Singh as saying, "I think today there is an agreement that international institutions if they are to be credible in terms of their ability to grapple with contemporary challenges they can't ignore countries like India and China."
