PRAIA DA LUZ, Portugal - A lawyer in Portugal is spending his own money for divers to scour a lake for the body of a British girl missing since May, British newspapers reported.
Marcos Aragao Correia announced divers had been scouring the man-made Barragem do Arade for several days based on information he had been given by underworld sources about Madeleine McCann's disappearance.
He said police refused to act on the information, so he decided to fund the search himself, The Daily Mail reported.
He said underworld contacts told him the child's body was dumped in the remote reservoir after she was raped and murdered after her disappearance May 3 from a holiday villa as her parents were out for dinner.
The 32-year-old human rights lawyer told The Daily Telegraph divers had found a 15-foot length of cord knotted together from several pieces.
"It is now with the police," Correia said. "I think it could turn out to be significant."
The girl's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were declared suspects by police on Sept. 7, but there has been little forensic evidence found to incriminate them, the newspapers said.
