MAPLE RIDGE, British Columbia - An overcrowded maximum-security prison in Canada's British Columbia Province was back under control Sunday, a day after inmates rioted.
A union for prison guards told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. there were no serious injuries during the four-hour melee at the Fraser Regional Correctional Center in Maple Ridge.
"A riot inside a maximum security prison is very frightening and scary. It's a very dangerous situation," Dean Purdy, a spokesman for the British Columbia Government Employees Union, told CBC News.
The prison held about 495 inmates, about 65 more than capacity. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said some inmates may have been upset they were being transferred to another facility.
