Laptops stolen from school office
by UPI

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland - Four laptop computers containing student information were stolen from the Eastern School District's Atlantic Place offices in St. John's, Newfoundland.

The district said one of the stolen computers contains a database of information on approximately 28,000 students -- including student names, Medical Care Plan numbers, addresses, grade levels, phone numbers and names of parents or guardians.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was investigating the incident as a "break, entry and theft," the school district said in a release.

"We are very concerned about this theft and possible breach of private information," Chief Executive Officer/Director of Education Darrin Pike said in a statement. "We have notified all authorities and school administrators and have also taken immediate action with our landlord at Atlantic Place to strengthen our physical security measures."

The school board said the stolen computers are password protected, which should limit access to information. The MCP Commission said access to individual medical records was not at risk.
