EDMONTON, Alberta - Police in Edmonton, Alberta, were searching for a suspect who painted a racial slur on a campaign sign for Edmonton-Mill Creek Liberal candidate Aman Gill.
Gill -- a candidate in the March 3 Alberta Legislative Assembly election -- spotted the sign with the word "Paki" written on it at her campaign office Saturday morning. Sexually explicit drawings covered her photograph, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
"It took me, I would say, at least an hour to overcome that," she said. "I have. I'm still motivated and I'm running out and talking to people. Because this is where my strength is -- in people."
Constable Glen Haneman said police were taking the crime very seriously, with the hate and bias crimes unit called in to investigate.
"Hopefully this is just an isolated incident," he said. "I thought we were above this type of behavior."
Gill, 33, said she had never encountered racism since she came to Canada from India in 1993.
