Gunfire, bombs claim 22 lives in Iraq
BAGHDAD -- Gunfire and car bombs killed more than 20 people -- including an Iraqi security officer -- in separate incidents reported throughout Iraq.
In Basra, an Iraqi security officer and three guards were killed Monday in their car when gunmen opened fire on the vehicle in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, Iraqi police told KUNA, the Kuwaiti news agency.
In Baghdad, meanwhile, a car bomb exploded in the center of the city, killing 15 people and wounding 38 others, KUNA reported. In eastern Baghdad a suicide attacker detonated an explosives-laden car at a security checkpoint, killing three people and wounding 15 others, police said.
The attacks followed Sunday's car bombing in which four Iraqi civilians, including a child, were killed and another six were wounded in Salaheddin province north of Baghdad, a U.S. military statement said.
