Police: Internet providers slow porn probe
by UPI

CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island -- Internet service providers in eastern Canadian provinces are delaying child pornography investigations, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

RCMP Constable Blair Ross, who works in the province of Prince Edward Island, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., the problem is with the region's two main providers, which insist on search warrants before releasing customer data.

Ross said the region is short-staffed and the warrant demands slow the process.

"So before we even begin to investigate we have that hurdle to jump over, which is time consuming," he told the broadcaster.

The report said in other parts of the country, other providers routinely hand over customer information to police without warrants.

In Eastern Canada, the two main providers, Aliant and Eastlink, told the CBC they are concerned with customers' privacy, although both said they would turn over information if someone was in imminent danger.
