EU offers Iran incentives to end nuke work
by UPI

TEHRAN -- The European Union's foreign policy leader traveled to Iran Friday to present a proposal of incentives in an effort to resolve Iran's nuclear aspirations.

The European Union, in a statement, said Javier Solana would offer the package in its latest attempt to get Iran to back off its uranium enrichment program, which the United States and other Western nations say is being used to develop nuclear weapons capabilities.

Solana will meet Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili during his two-day visit, KUNA, the Kuwait News Agency, reported.

On Saturday, Solana is to present to Iran "the updated package of proposals seeking to resolve the problems that Iran's nuclear program raises with the international community and to enter into a normalized relationship with Iran in all areas," his office said.

Germany and the five permanent United Nations Security Council members -- Britain, the United States, France, Russia, and China -- prepared the new package.

While attending an EU summit in Slovenia, U.S. President George Bush said he would prefer diplomacy prompt Iran to abandon its uranium enrichment activity, but would keep "other options open."
