Jewish center attacked in Venezuela
by UPI

CARACAS, Venezuela - An explosive device has detonated at a Jewish community center in the Venezuelan city of Caracas, causing no casualties, the director of the site says.

Center Director Abraham Garzon said the only injuries from this week's attack were of a spiritual nature, adding "it seems there are people in the country who are dedicated to sowing terror," the Latin American Herald reported Friday.

The explosive used in Thursday's attack may have been a small grenade or a pipe bomb according to initial reports.

Government prosecutors said in a statement that a police counter-terrorism division is working with prosecutor Daniel Guedez on a probe into the center attack.

Caracas was already the focus of international attention as the result of a Jan. 29 act of vandalism at a local synagogue, the Herald said.

Several religious items were destroyed at the Caracas synagogue during the incident and the vandals spray-painted phrases such as "Jews, get out" on the site's walls.

The Herald said the incident led to the arrest of four civilians and seven police officers.
