MANILA, Philippines -- A public works official shot in an ambush in the Philippines capital died Thursday of his injuries at a Manila hospital, a government official says.
Deputy presidential representative Lorelei Fajardo said Public Works and Highways Undersecretary Ramon Aquino died of multiple organ failure more than a week after being attacked outside his Manila apartment, the Philippine Daily Inquirer said.
"The palace is deeply saddened. We mourn his profound loss and commiserate with his family. We will see to it that the perpetrators are brought to justice," Fajardo said.
Aquino was shot multiple times March 11 and later suffered a heart attack following a liver operation.
Police Superintendent Rogelio Rosales, the head of the task group investigating the attack, said two gunmen are being sought.
"A team of investigators is still questioning employees and security guards assigned at the DPWH for any leads to the identities and whereabouts of the suspects," he said.
The Inquirer said Aquino's driver, Victor Salonga, and security aide, Antonio Canalete, were also shot in the ambush. The condition of the other victims was not reported.
