Russia bans foreign market, retail workers
by UPI

MOSCOW - As of Sunday, foreigners no longer are allowed to sell goods at markets and retail outlets in Russia.

Vyacheslav Postavnin of the Russian Federal Migration Service said migrants still have the right to work at markets as "loaders, cleaners, wholesalers, managers or to take workplaces on lease," the Itar-Tass news agency said.

Last year, Russia implemented a range of new immigration laws aimed at managing immigration. The service said migrant workers who come to Russia from a visa-less country only need to obtain migration cards upon arrival.

"Having this migration card, an application, a passport and 1,000 rubles (about $35), a foreign worker will get a work permit in 10 days," Postavnin said.

Migration service head Konstantin Romodanovsky said last year 1.2 million legal migrants worked in Russia, up by 64 percent from the year before. There are about 10 million illegal migrants in Russia, Itar-Tass said.
