Fish kill seen from Canadian derailment
by UPI

NORTH BAY, Ontario - Dead fish washed up on the shores of a northern Ontario river Tuesday where a train derailment resulted in a spill of 40,000 gallons of sulfuric acid.

Provincial environment crews were on the scene of Friday's derailment of an Ontario Northland train about 130 miles of North Bay, dumping dry lime into the Blanche River to try to neutralize the acid, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., reported.

Farmers in the area were told not allow their livestock to drink river water, although a municipal well system for about 1,500 residents of the town of Englehart was not affected, officials said. By late Monday, dead fish appeared on the river's banks and resident George Moerman said he has doubts about the cleanup efforts.

"Once it's spilled, it's gone. Like you can't retrieve this anymore," he said. "It's pretty awesome when you think what (the spill) might cause further down the line."

Investigators are also trying to determine why 22 cars of the 33-car train left the tracks. By Tuesday, crumpled box cars containing copper and zinc had not been uprighted, the CBC said.
