Egypt's anti-terror efforts draw criticism
by UPI

CAIRO - Amnesty International has condemned Egypt's efforts to fight terrorism, alleging in a new report that Egypt is violating peoples' human rights.

The organization said in a news release Wednesday that Egypt had detained thousands of its citizens without fair trials, and many terror suspects had been tortured.

The report warned that Egypt's newest anti-terror law could lead to further human rights violations.

Amnesty International official Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui said Egypt must share pertinent information on its anti-terror effort with the international community to limit similar incidents in the future.

"The Egyptian authorities must come clean and disclose the number, names, nationality and current whereabouts of all terrorism suspects extradited, subjected to 'rendition' or otherwise transferred into their custody from abroad," he said. "It must also lift the shroud of impunity that protects those who torture in the name of the state."
